WATERLOO – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks announced today the football players of the week for Week 2 of the season and they include running back Dillon Campbell on offence, defensive lineman Kwaku Boateng on defence, and returner Will Pitt-Doe on special teams.
The Laurier Football Players of the Game are recognized weekly at the Quarterback Club luncheon. This week’s luncheon will be held on Thursday, September 10 in the Hawk’s Nest and will run from noon to 1 p.m.
Campbell, originally from Whitby, Ont., was the Hawks most dangerous weapon during their 30-19 loss to the No. 6 Guelph Gryphons on Monday. The fifth year kinesiology and physical education major racked up 171 all-purpose yards on the day to pace the Hawks offence. He finished the day with 67 yards on the ground, as well as a touchdown, and was Laurier’s top receiver, making seven catches for 104 yards. That performance marked the first time in his career he’s had more than 100 receiving yards in a game.
Boateng, from Milton, Ont., was a presence in the Gryphons backfield all afternoon in the Hawks loss in Guelph on Monday. The third year business major was consistently in the face of Gryphons quarterback James Roberts and finished the game with 1.5 tackles, including a tackle for a loss. His effort helped limit one of the top offences in the league to just two touchdowns on the afternoon.
Finally, Pitt-Doe, from Mississauga, Ont., had a strong day on special teams for Laurier in their loss to the Gryphons. The third year economics major averaged 26.5 yards on two kick returns, including a long of 36 yards. Those numbers helped push his season total return average to 25.6 yards, closing in on his average of 28.0 yards per return that he had during his record-breaking rookie season.
