WATERLOO,N – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks announced today the football players of the week for Week 3 of the season and they include receiver Daniel Bennett on offence, defensive back Austin Reusch on defence, and kicker Nathan Mesher on special teams.
The Laurier Football Players of the Game are recognized weekly at the Quarterback Club luncheon. This week’s luncheon will be held on Thursday, September 17 in the Hawk’s Nest and will run from noon to 1 p.m.
Bennett, from Scarborough, Ont., was the Golden Hawks top receiver in their loss to the No. 3 Western Mustangs on Saturday. The third year communications studies major led the team in receptions with five, and yards with 75 in just his second-ever start with the purple and gold. Despite missing the first game of the season, Bennett currently ranks third on the team in receiving yards with 137 and fourth on the team in catches with 10.
Reusch, originally from Burlington, Ont., was one of Laurier’s best cover players on Saturday against a talented Western lineup. The fourth year business major posted a season-high five total tackles as he played tough defence against the Mustangs receivers. He now has 11.5 tackles on the season, tying him for second among all Laurier defensive backs.
Waterloo, Ont., native Mesher had the best game of his young career with the purple and gold as he contributed all nine points the Hawks scored against the Mustangs. The second year business major finished the night a perfect 3-for-3 on his attempts, moving him up to 83 percent (5-for-6) on the year. He also averaged 33.1 yards per punt, including a season long of 43 yards.
