WATERLOO, ON – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks announced today the football players of the week for Week 7 of the season and they include quarterback Eric Morelli on offence, defensive lineman Asante Mizan on defence, and cover Darian Waite on special teams.

The Laurier Football Players of the Game are recognized weekly at the Quarterback Club luncheon. This week’s luncheon will be held on Thursday, October 15 in the Hawk’s Nest and will run from noon to 1 p.m.

Morelli, a native of Burlington, Ont., had a game to remember in Friday night’s 65-30 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The fourth year business student tied a team record as he threw for six touchdown passes, equaling the mark set twice by former Hec Crighton Trophy recipient Bill Kubas in 1992 and 1994. Morelli, in just his third career start, would go on to finish the game completing 20 of the 24 passes he attempted for 298 yards as the Hawks took over sole possession of the sixth and final playoff spot in the OUA.

Mizan, originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., was a presence for the Golden Hawks defence as they shut down the Gee-Gees offence early and often in Laurier’s win on Friday night. The fifth year philosophy major, as part of a mostly three-man rush all night, was effective in slowing down Ottawa’s running game while also getting pressure on Ottawa quarterback Derek Wendel, the leading passer in the OUA coming into the game, and limiting him to 61 yards passing in the first half. Mizan would finish the night with two solo and two assisted tackles in his most effective game of the year.

Finally, Waite, originally from Newmarket, Ont., and generally a cover man on special teams, was thrust into the spotlight as a returner in Friday’s night win over Ottawa thanks to four on-side kick attempts by the Gee-Gees. The fourth year arts major successfully caught two of the attempts, returning them for a total of 13 yards. His most impressive play came on the second kick he recovered, leaping over two Gee-Gees to recover the attempt for the purple and gold.

The Laurier Football players of the week are presented by OneCard and the Laurier Bookstore.
