Gittens Jr. & Millar named Players of the Week

WATERLOO, ON – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks announced today the football players of the week for Week 8 of the season and they include receiver/returner Kurleigh Gittens Jr. on both offence and special teams, and defensive back Ben Millar on defence.

The Laurier Football Players of the Game are recognized weekly at the Quarterback Club luncheon. This week’s luncheon will be held on Thursday, October 22 in the Hawk’s Nest and will run from noon to 1 p.m.

Gittens Jr., a native of Ottawa, had a breakout performance for the Golden Hawks in their 30-21 loss to the No. 6 McMaster Marauders on Saturday. The first year sociology major shone on both offence and special teams for Laurier as he accumulated 251 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in the contest. On offence, the freshman had eight catches for 104 yards and a touchdown, marking the second consecutive contest that he’s recorded over 100 yards receiving. On special teams, Gittens Jr. returned four kickoffs for 147 yards, highlighted by a 101-yard return for a touchdown in the first quarter. That return goes into the Laurier record books as it matches the second longest return in team history.

As for Millar, who is originally from Campbellville, Ont., he also had an impact on Laurier’s point total in the Hawks loss to McMaster this past weekend. The fourth year arts major recorded one of Laurier’s two interceptions on the day and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown, making it the longest interception return in the OUA this season. Millar also recorded two tackles against the Marauders.

The Laurier Football players of the week are presented by OneCard and the Laurier Bookstore.
