WATERLOO, ON – Women’s lacrosse defenceman Maddy Curtis and men’s football linebacker Brandon Calver have been named this week’s Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 25, 2015.
Curtis, a senior defenceman, was a rock for the young Hawks as they went 1-2 at the OUA Championship this weekend to take fourth place. The fifth year Global Studies major hailing from Peterborough, Ont.,led the Hawks strong defensive performance against the Western Mustangs, limiting the eventual OUA Champions to only 12 goals. Following the tournament, Curtis was honoured as an OUA First Team All-Star for the second consecutive year.
This is Curtis’ first time being named the Laurier Female Athlete of the Week.
Calver, a third year linebacker, was a clear defensive asset in his team’s thrilling 49-26 victory over the Queen’s Gaels last weekend that paved the way to playoffs for the Golden Hawks. The arts major from London, Ont., recorded a career-high 11 tackles and one sack on the afternoon. Calver’s defensive pressure was felt by Queen’s quarterback, who took several big hits from the Hawks middle linebacker, and provided the Golden Hawks the opportunities they needed to take the victory.
This is Calver’s first time being honoured as the Laurier Male Athlete of the Week.
