Laurier football weekly update

Week9_7Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

We had our Laurier Football Banquet this past weekend and it was a great evening full of awards and speeches from our graduating players. Thank you to the OUAtv and RadioLaurier broadcast team of Dan Polischuk and Justin Fauteux who emceed the event and kept everything moving smoothly. A big thank you also to so many of our players’ parents that attended. Your support of your sons and the program continues to amaze us.

To the graduating class: fantastic job on your speeches! You guys have definitely laid the foundation in the last few years for continued success with Laurier Football. Not if, but WHEN we win the Yates Cup, you are a big reason why we were able to accomplish that feat.

Congratulations to the winners of the six awards that were handed out:

Laurier Leader Award – WR Greg Nyhof
Lineman of the Year – DL Kwaku Boateng
Special Teams MVP – RB Darian Waite
Offensive MVP – OL Chris Reddy
Defensive MVP – LB Nakas Onyeka

Team MVP was also announced, but both that award and the rookie of the year will be announced at April’s athletic banquet.

Here’s what is happening:

Winter Practice #1
It is great to get back on the field and see our team compete in practice again. With the graduation of several starters, we have some fantastic competition going on at quite a few positions.

Our depth has continued to improve over the last few years and everyone recognizes that they can’t afford to take a workout, a meeting, or a practice off because the guy behind them is eager to take their position.

We are back at the RIM Park indoor bubble again this Friday from 3pm – 5pm for anyone interested in watching.

Excited that this week we have added a very large recruit and that is 6’5” 300lb offensive lineman Trawn Barrington. Trawn is the first offensive lineman in this recruiting class and he immediately gives us more size and length upfront. Read the full story here.

Adopt-A-Hawk – $32,226 and counting
We are almost there! The goal of passing last year’s total of $33,000 is well within reach now and we still have four more months in this fiscal year. Thank you to all that have helped us reach this goal. It helps our program greatly and we are closing the gap with the OUA’s top teams.
