After a memorable season in which their program took a big step forward by reaching the OUA semi-finals for the first time since 2010, the Laurier Golden Hawks are looking to use that momentum to improve even further.
In an effort to do so, Head Coach Michael Faulds and his coaching staff have finalized an agreement with the 2015 Vanier Cup finalist Montreal Carabins to hold an exhibition game on Saturday August 20th in Montreal. Kick-off is set for 1pm at CEPSUM Stadium.
The game against the back-to-back Dunsmore Cup champions will take place six days after the start of Laurier’s training camp on Sunday August 14th. The Golden Hawks will travel to Montreal on Friday August 19th and return immediately after the game.
Faulds described the opportunity for the Golden Hawks to compete against one of the best programs as “very exciting.”
“Coach Danny Maciocia has one of the top programs in the country. Anytime you can have your team compete against the best it’s a good thing,” he said.
Montreal also won the Vanier Cup in 2014.
The announcement of the exhibition game comes a year after Laurier travelled to Saskatchewan to face the Huskies. It was also a re-match of sorts, as it marked the 10 year anniversary of the Hawks’ latest Vanier Cup win in 2005 – when they defeated Saskatchewan in Hamilton.
Unlike last season’s trip though, where the number of travelling players was limited, Faulds commented how “the nice thing about this preseason trip is that we will be able to take more of our players.”
“And I know they are excited about that.”
Ticket information has yet to be formally announced.
