Laurier football weekly update

faulds profile 1Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

It was a very impressive showing in our preseason game as we traveled to Montreal to take on the Montreal Carabins this past weekend. Yes, the same Carabins team that won the Vanier Cup in 2014 against McMaster and lost a close game to UBC in last year’s championship game.

We came out strong in front of 3,000 loud fans in CEPSUM Stadium in downtown Montreal. A closely-contested first quarter saw both teams exchange field goals. Then, in the second quarter, defensive back Scott Hutter made a great interception to give us the ball again. Right after, quarterback Julien John found second year receiver Brentyn Hall on a beautiful 75 yard touchdown pass. We took a 13-9 lead into the half to the amazement of the fans in attendance.

After Montreal took the lead back on the opening drive of the second half, a big 65-yard kick return by rookie Julious Washington (Atlanta, Georgia) gave our offence great field position. Quarterback Michael Knevel started the third quarter and marched the offence down the field with some nice passes, including one to receiver Carson Ouellette that put us inside the Montreal 10 yard line. From there, fifth year running back Eric Guiltinan ran behind some great offensive line push for the major.

Our defence also found the end-zone when First Team All-Canadian defensive back Godfrey Onyeka stripped the ball away from a Montreal receiver and teammate (and fellow defensive back Malcolm Thompson) picked up the loose ball and took it back 52 yards for the touchdown to give us a 27-19 lead mid-way through the third quarter.

Montreal’s depth showed in the fourth quarter as they were able to regain the lead. We did, however, find the end-zone one more time when Knevel threw a TD pass to Hall. Hall finished the day with 4 receptions for 124 yards.

In the end we lost 37-33, but we can take many positives from this game: starters vs. starters, we led both at halftime and at the start of the fourth quarter and we had great moments in all three phases (offence, defence & special teams). There are still many things we can learn from and correct but, overall, we gained confidence that we can play with any team from any conference.
