WATERLOO, Ont. (August 29, 2016) – Men’s football defensive back Godfrey Onyeka of Brampton Ont., and women’s soccer forward Maxine Murchie of Kitchener Ont., have been announced as this week’s Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending August 29, 2016.
Onyeka, a third year biology major of Brampton Ont. and defensive back for the Hawks, was a key factor in Laurier’s home opener win against the Queen’s Gaels. Not only did the All-Canadian and All-Star athlete have a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown that gave the Hawks a 23-18 lead in the fourth quarter, but he also forced and recovered a Queen’s fumble following his touchdown Two plays later, the Hawks scored 27 yard touchdown secured Laurier’s final score of 37-18. Onyeka would also finish the contest with 4.5 total tackles and one pass breakup.
This is Onyeka’s first time earning Male Athlete of the Week honours.
Murchie, a fourth year forward from Kitchener Ont., put together a strong weekend on the field as she recorded two goals and multiple shots on net during women’s soccer’s games against Guelph and Waterloo. She opened her weekend with a goal in Laurier’s 2-2 tie against the Gryphons before scoring in the 88th minute against Waterloo to earn Laurier a 1-1 draw on the road. Following her effort, Murchie is tied for fourth in OUA scoring following the opening weekend of the season
This is Murchie’s second time earning Female Athlete of the Week honours.
