Laurier football weekly update

faulds profile 1Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

We are 1-0 after a 37-18 victory over the Queen’s Gaels Sunday afternoon. Thank you to all in attendance for supporting our boys on the field.

Offence
It was a slow start on offence and we weren’t able to move the ball as successfully as we did against the Montreal Carabins in the preseason game. Turnovers were the big story as we had four passes intercepted and we also fumbled once.

Finally, in the third quarter, we were able to find a bit of life as explosive WR Kurleigh Gittens JR showed off his speed on a jet sweep that went for 31 yards and a touchdown.

Then in the fourth quarter (with great field position), QB Julien John found TE Mario Villamizar for a 27 yard touchdown pass and catch. We were then able to gain possession again after another Queen’s turnover and RB Eric Guiltinan ran in a seven yard TD rush behind great blocking up front.

Defence
Tough, fierce and relentless come to mind when describing our defensive play. The defensive front got pressure on the Queen’s quarterback all day, which included nine sacks. Kwaku Boateng (two), Robbie Smith (two), Nakas Onyeka (two), Jalen Price, Brandon Calver and Yalkun Sakir all found their way to the Queen’s pivot.

We were also able to create big turnovers as Ron Kinga had a big interception in the first quarter and the biggest play of the day was an interception by defensive back Godfrey Onyeka in the fourth quarter. Not only did Godfrey pick the ball off, but he was able to take it back 43 yards for the touchdown. This finally gave us the lead with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

Special Teams
Kicker Nathan Mesher picked right up from where he left off last season. Nathan was 2/3 on Field Goals, including one that was good all the way from 49 yards. Nathan also was busy punting with 11 punts on the day for a very impressive 42 yard average.

We have another kicker with the initials NM and that is first year player Nathan McLean who was responsible for kickoffs. On Nathan’s five kickoffs, he averaged a great 61.4 yards in his CIS football debut. In the return game, Julious Washington had three kickoff returns for an average of 22.3 yards and Carson Ouellette was his usual calm and steady self on his seven punt returns averaging 9.3 yard per return.

Next Up
Our next game is at home this Monday night against the York Lions at 7:30pm. York is coming off of a big 57-13 win over the Waterloo Warriors and will come in here with a ton of confidence. We need to have a great week of preparation, continue to play tough defence and, offensively, build off of the momentum we started to see late in the game against Queen’s. We hope to see you in attendance!
