WATERLOO, ON – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks announced today the football players of the week following their Week 2 win over the York Lions on Monday night. The athletes recognized include Eric Guiltinan on offence, defensive back Malcolm Thompson of defence, and returner Carson Ouellette on special teams.
The Laurier Football Players of the Game are recognized at the Quarterback Club luncheon. Due to this week’s bye week for men’s football, the players will be recognized next Thursday, September 15th in the Hawk’s Nest and will run from noon to 1 p.m.
Earning the recognition for the second time in two games as a player of the week, Eric Guiltinan of London, Ont. is coming in hot on offence in his fifth year on the team. Monday’s game against the York Lions marked his second career start for the Golden Hawks in which he led the Hawks potent rushing attack that posted 575 yards, the second highest total in team and OUA history. What’s more is, not only did he post a career-high 180 yards on 18 carries while scoring two touchdowns, but following this performance he now leads the OUA in total rushing yards, with 265, and average rushing yards per game, at 132.5, through two weeks.
Thompson, a third year sociology student from Windsor Ont., anchored Laurier’s back line while simultaneously contributing to the Hawks offensive play against the Lions. On Monday night, Thompson had a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown which marks the second straight year he’s returned an interception for a touchdown against York. As a clear force on both ends of the field, Thompson also recorded three tackles and one pass breakup. Additionally, in 14 career games, including preseason, regular season and post season, Thompson now has four touchdowns as a defensive back.
Meanwhile, Ouellette, the third year receiver from Windsor Ont., returned a punt 65 yards to score his first career special teams touchdown, a play that capped off the scoring in Laurier’s win. His 11 punt returns in the game, tied for the most in single game in team history, and 127 punt return yards, the fourth most in a single game in team history, etched Ouellette’s name in the Golden Hawk record book after an impressive outing. His performances means that after two games, Ouellette currently leads the OUA in punt return yards with 192.
