WATERLOO, ON – The No. 7 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks announced today the football players of the week following their 17-16 victory over the No. 4 Carleton Ravens on Saturday afternoon. The athletes recognized include running back Eric Guiltinan on offence, defensive back Scott Hutter of defence, and returnerCarson Ouellette on special teams.
The Laurier Football Players of the Game are recognized at the Quarterback Club luncheon in the Hawk’s Nest every Thursday and will run from noon to 1 p.m. on September 22 this week.
For three consecutive weeks, Guiltinan, a native of London Ont., has been recognized for his supreme offensive talent. Saturday’s game against the Carleton Ravens saw the fifth year business major record a total of 212 of Laurier’s 263 yards of offence. What’s more is, by rushing 200 yards on 23 carries, Guiltinan goes down in Laurier history as the sixth player to ever record a 200-yard rushing game. He would also add two receptions for 12 yards in the game and currently finds himself first in the conference for rushing yards per game with 155.0.
Hutter, a second year defensive back from London, Ont., single handedly carried the Hawks out of a 7-0 hole against the Ravens. When things were looking down late in the second quarter, Hutter stepped in front of a Mills pass and returned it 54-yards for a touchdown to tie the game at seven. Not only did this mark Hutter’s first career touchdown, but also provides Laurier their third straight game with an interception return for a touchdown. Hutter would also add 4.5 total tackles, one pass breakup and a fumble recovery, which set up the game-winning field goal.
Furthermore, despite constant sheets of thick rain blinding eyes and greasing gloves, third year receiver Carson Ouellette of Windsor Ont., managed to catch every single punt on the fly against the Ravens on Saturday. Returning ten punts for a total of 48 punt return yards in the game, Saturday’s performance secures Ouellette as having the team’s most punt returns and punt return yards, with 19 punts and 195 yards to his name. Earning a Player of the Week honour for two consecutive games, Ouellette has certainly been a driving force of Laurier’s undefeated record.
The Laurier Football Players of the Week are presented by OneCard and the Laurier Bookstore.
