Laurier Football is pleased to announce the first two commitments to the 2017 recruiting class: local offensive lineman Alex Pigozzo of Resurrection CSS in Kitchener and defensive back Aden Alkinani from Sarnia Northern SS and the London Jr. Mustangs of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL).
Pigozzo is 6’3” and 280 pounds and was a member of the Cambridge Lions OVFL championship-winning team from this past season. Pigozzo previously has experience under Laurier Offensive Line Coach Irv Daymond as a member of Team Ontario Selects All-Star team which competed in Arlington, TX against Team USA in International Bowl competition this past January.
“We are really excited to add a local player as talented as Alex to our 2017 recruiting class,” commented Laurier Head Coach Michael Faulds.
“On the field, Alex will be a great addition to our offensive line and in the classroom he will excel in our terrific Business school”.
According to Pigozzo, he chose Laurier for these reasons.
“It’s the best fit for me. Laurier has an energy that I’m drawn to, whether that be in football or the academic environment. It’s a tight-knit community where I feel like family.”
Alkinani has also been a member of Team Ontario Selects, competing in Texas against Team USA. Alkinani plays cornerback and Laurier defensive backs Coach Dwayne Cameron describes him as “a highly intelligent and instinctive player in the secondary.”
“He does not shy away from contact and likes to play press man coverage at the LOS. We have had him in our high school camp, so we know what we are getting. His attitude and work ethic are exceptional.”
On why he chose Laurier, Alkinani explained that “from the first time I stepped on campus, I felt like I was at home.
“As a DB, to be able to play with one of the best defenses in the CIS was an opportunity I could not pass up. Academically, Laurier is the right fit. I look forward to learning from the faculty and teaching staff”.
