Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,
Thank you to all that made Homecoming such a special event last weekend. We have now moved to 4-0 on the season after a 68-7 win over crosstown rivals the Waterloo Warriors. Watch the video recap here.
Quarterback Michael Knevel made his first ever CIS start and he was very efficient on the day, throwing for 199 yards with two touchdown passes and zero interceptions. The touchdowns were caught by receiver Brendan McCracken and tight end Mario Villamizar.
On the ground, we once again had a huge day as our offensive line and full backs paved the way for 440 rushing yards. Levondre Gordon had a big 54 yard touchdown run and Eric Guiltinan was simply amazing with 14 carries for 176 yards and four touchdowns.
We have a new sack master here at Laurier as Kwaku Boateng recorded his 18th career sack, breaking Eric Schwab’s school record. Kwaku didn’t just sack the Waterloo quarterback, but he did so in the endzone which resulted in a safety.
Three other Hawks recorded sacks on the day as Jalen Price and Trevaughan James each had one and Scott Hutter had two. Many others had great performances, as linebacker Nakas Onyeka led the way with 7.5 tackles and first year defensive back Christian Hutter-Coppin had an interception.
In the return game, we had a good day as Levondre Gordon had a 28 yard punt return and Kurleigh Gittens Jr had a 42 yard kickoff return. In the kicking game, both Nathan Mesher and Nathan McLean were a perfect 1 for 1 on Field Goals. Nathan Mesher was also very good in punting has he had a terrific average of 43.8 yards per punt, including two that pinned Waterloo inside their own 20 yard line.
Our 4-0 Golden Hawks head down to London to take on the 4-1 Mustangs. Western is going to be a great test for us and we know it is going to take a full team effort for four quarters to win. We would love to have some of our shade of purple in the crowd cheering on our boys!
