Gordon, Onyeka and Waite named POTW

WATERLOO, ON – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks announced today the football players of the week following their 27-25 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Friday afternoon. The athletes recognized include running back Levondre Gordon on offence, linebacker Nakas Onyeka of defense, and returner Darian Waite on special teams.

The Laurier Football Players of the Game are recognized at the Quarterback Club luncheon in the Hawk’s Nest every Thursday and will run from noon to 1 p.m. on October 20th this week.

Gordon, a second year running back from Mississauga, Ont., has made his presence known on the field. During Friday’s game against the Gryphons, Gordon started proceedings just five minutes into the contest as he broke a 71-yard run for a touchdown to give Laurier a 7-0 lead. Later in the game, when Guelph posted a touchdown to cut Laurier’s lead 24-13, Gordon responded with a 36-yard run on the next possession to gain a field goal, and restored the Hawks to a greater advantage. Throughout the game, Gordon rushed for an incredible 193 yards.

Overall, Gordon’s performance moved him into fifth in conference rushing with 528 yards on the season while his 16.1 yards per carry average upped his league-best rushing average to 9.6 yards per carry. Needless to say, Gordon was certainly the offensive pulse that paced the Hawks to their sixth win of the season.

Furthermore, Onyeka, a fourth year Communications major from Brampton Ont., once again proved to anchor the purple and gold defense. Throughout Friday’s game, Onyeka recorded 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for a loss. His outstanding performance in regards to his tackles for a loss, gives him a total of 13 on the season, which now has him holding the second most in the conference. As for his 12-tackle act, he now owns 146 for his career, and has moved up to fourth place on Laurier’s career tackles list.

As for Waite, in what was his first game back from injury after being out for three games, the Newmarket, Ont., native showed no signs of being slowed down. During the contest, Waite posted two tackles that proved to be imperative for the Hawks to come away with a victory. Most importantly, Darian also recovered Guelph’s on-side kick attempt late in the 4th quarter.  In the past two years, teams have attempted 4 onside kicks against the Hawks and Waite has recovered every one of them.
