WATERLOO, ON – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks announced today the Football Players of the Week from their victory over the Windsor Lancers, and they include receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr., on offence, linebacker Brandon Calver on defence and defensive back Mitchell Choma-Phillips on special teams.
The Laurier Football Players of the Week are recognized weekly at the Quarterback Club luncheon. This week’s luncheon will be held on Thursday, October 27th in the Hawk’s Nest and will run from noon to 1 p.m.
Gittens Jr., a native of Ottawa, Ont., had yet another game to remember in Saturday afternoon’s 38-9 win over the Windsor Lancers. The second year sociology major had a game-high 122 yards through the air, which marks the second most of his career. Gittens Jr. also wraps up the season with a spot in the Golden Hawk history books, as he finished the year with 293 kickoff return yards, the sixth most by a single player in school history.
Brandon Calver of London, Ont., was also a strong presence for the Hawks on Saturday. Throughout the game, Calver held Windsor’s offence at bay by placing constant pressure on the Lancers quarterback. Furthermore, not only did the fourth year Arts major post a total of 5.5 tackles, but he also had 2 sacks for 18 yards.
Finally, Mitchell Choma-Phillips, from Hamilton Ont., was dangerous in the return game on Saturday as he put the Hawks in great field position with his impressive performance on Laurier’s cover teams. What’s more is, the first year communications major also recorded a special team’s tackle, to clearly end the regular season on a high note.
