Laurier Football is very excited to announce the commitment of two very solid defensive prospects to the 2017 Recruiting Class. Defensive end/fullback Damian Tesoro and linebacker Mitch Rooney are teammates with both the Hamilton Jr. Ticats and Waterdown District High School.
Tesoro, a 6’3″, 235lb two-way threat, will ultimately make a decision on whether to join Laurier’s vaunted defense or look to make big plays as a part of the Hawks emerging offense.
“I first noticed Damian two years ago. You could tell he was different even then, and that if he continued to grow and mature, that he would very much be someone that could do great things here for us,” said Laurier Recruiting Coordinator Dwayne Cameron.
“I like his athleticism for his size and he plays a very physical brand of football.”
The linebacker position is the Hawks’ greatest defensive priority in 2017 recruiting and, in the 6’2″, 225lb Rooney, the Hawks have landed a dynamic individual.
Rooney is a two-sport star, having formerly been a 2014 seventh round draft selection of the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers, after playing junior hockey for the Hamilton Bulldogs. That type of pedigree is key for Cameron.
“Mitch is a high-level, multi-sport guy, which is a bonus,” he said, adding, “Specifically with his hockey background, we know we are getting a linebacker who possess athletic footwork and hips, and will combine that with toughness. And he should be a special teams dream for us.”
