Laurier football weekly update

Laurier welcomes Coach Will Finch.

Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

It has definitely been a busy week and lots is happening with the program. We sadly say goodbye to one coach and quickly welcome a new one.

After four years of coaching receivers and two years of being our Offensive Coordinator, Coach Mark Surya has moved on to become the Offensive Coordinator at the University of Toronto. We will miss Coach Surya and wish him all the best!

The move means that I resume offensive play calling duties, but I will have lots of help. I will focus on mainly coordinating the passing game and up-and-coming coach Jackson Yanchus will focus on coordinating the run game. Jackson has assisted Coach Irv Daymond with the Offensive Line and, this past season, he was our running backs coach.

An exciting addition to our coaching staff is a very familiar name to OUA and USports football fans and that is Will Finch. Coach Finch will be our new Quarterback Coach, allowing me to move over and become the receivers coach.

In other exciting news, we have announced that we will be heading to Concordia for a preseason game. A preseason game has become an annual tradition for us; Saskatchewan Huskies in 2015, Montreal Carabins in 2016 and now Concordia Stingers in 2017. For full article on game click here:

Here’s what is happening:

  1. It would be great if the university could have a Fan Bus going to Montreal since there were a lot of fans that made the trip last year, if you are trying to increase the amount of fans coming to the games this would be a good start and advertise it…… Yes there would be a charge, but I am sure people who drove to Montreal last year and others who could not go would be interested. You could possibly make a few Dollars on it to.

    1. Thanks for your suggestion and interest in attending the game. We have passed your comment along to the Laurier Athletic Department and hopefully we’ll have an update for you in the weeks leading up to it!
