WATERLOO, ON – The Wilfrid Laurier University men’s football team announced on Wednesday that offensive line coach Irv Daymond has signed a five-year contract extension that will see him remain on the coaching staff through the 2021 season.
Daymond, who has been a member of the Golden Hawks coaching staff since 2013, has overseen a complete rebuild of Laurier’s offensive line over the last four years, and culminated with them leading the way for the top rushing offence in the nation in 2016.
“There is absolutely no arguing that Coach Daymond is the best offensive line coach in the country and we are ecstatic that he has signed on with us for five more years,” said head coach Michael Faulds on Daymond’s extension.
A former Canadian Football League (CFL) All-Star who played 10 years with the Ottawa Rough Riders, Daymond has played an instrumental role in the Golden Hawks turnaround since joining the purple and gold. His work with the offensive line allowed former running back Dillon Campbell to lead Ontario University Athletics (OUA) in rushing for three consecutive years, the latter two of which he also led the nation in rushing.
“Coach Daymond’s offensive line paved the way for all the great Dillon Campbell seasons and this past season was their most impressive to date,” added Faulds. “Behind the instruction of Coach Daymond we led the nation in rushing yards which is an amazing accomplishment considering every team knows that we are going to run the football.”
Daymond’s offensive line has also done an outstanding job of protecting Laurier quarterbacks over the last three seasons, allowing just 1.5 sacks per game, including eight all of last season.
Wilfrid Laurier marks the third stop for Daymond in his U SPORTS coaching career as he has previously spent time with the Ottawa Gee-Gees and the McGill Redmen.
