WATERLOO, ON – Last Friday evening, the Wilfrid Laurier Department of Athletics and Recreation hosted the 18th annual Golden Hawks Football Dinner, presented by Sun Life Financial, at Bingemans Conference Centre.
The event raised over $40,000 which will directly benefit the Golden Hawks football program.
Highlighting the evening was a roundtable question and answer session featuring some of those closest to the Golden Hawks thrilling Yates Cup victory over the Western Mustangs last November. Hosted by emcee Andy Baechler, the roundtable also featured head coach Michael Faulds, quarterback Michael Knevel, linebacker Nakas Onyeka as well as Mark Lee and Justin Dunk, the two commentators who called the game on CHCH television.
The dinner also marked the official launch of the Legacy Fund fundraising initiative for the football program. The goal of the Legacy Fund is to generate a $5 million football legacy endowment fund by 2020 to ensure the program has a full complement of coaches, has a stronger recruiting presence across Ontario and Canada, improves the team’s technology and provides best-in-class academic support, scholarship support and athletic therapy. Finally, Coach Faulds delivered his annual State of the Program address which looked back on the 2016 season, as well as this year’s Spring Camp, and provided an outlook for the upcoming 2017 season.
The Golden Hawks Football Dinner is a fundraising initiative of the Laurier Golden Hawk Football program. To date, the event has raised close to $1 million for the Golden Hawk football program. The funds are directed into enhancements and support, such as equipment, academic assistance, coaching support and facilities.
Laurier will open their 2017 season at home on Sunday, August 27 when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues at University Stadium. Laurier will also play host to the Carleton Ravens (Saturday, September 9), the Western Mustangs (Homecoming – Saturday, September 30) and the McMaster Marauders (Saturday, October 21) in their 2017 home schedule.
