Laurier football weekly update

20170817 - Kha Vo - Laurier Football vs Stingers_-574Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

Training camp has come and gone and we are now into game prep for Sunday’s Home Opener against the Toronto Varsity Blues at 1pm. Please get your tickets at

It was a very good first week of practices, with both our veteran players and incoming freshman all digesting a lot of information and working extremely hard. We concluded the week with a trip to Montreal to take on the Concordia Stingers. We lost the game 23-16 but, for preseason games, it is a good idea to always look at the halftime score, as that is a better indication of starters vs. starters.

At halftime, we were up 13-2 led by some stellar defense, which included high tackle numbers by our new linebackers Brad Cowan (6.5), Daniel Szatmari (6) and Tanner Cadwallader (5.5). Offensively in the first half, Levondre Gordon was special with 10 carries for 98 yards and a TD.

Where we can improve greatly is in the penalty department and this has been addressed already with a grueling team run. We had 20 penalties for 171 yards. This is far too many and it is important we clean this up now.

A big THANK YOU to all of the guest coaches we had at training camp this year. Our players had the luxury of learning from defensive line Coach Ken Hussey and many great former Hawks: receiver Andre Talbot, receiver Dante Luciani, defensive back Donnie Ruiz, linebacker Anthony Maggiacomo, and defensive lineman Kyle Armour.

Here’s what is happening:

Post-Game Reception
All parents, alumni and friends of the program are invited to our post-game reception and party at Wilf’s right after Sunday’s game vs. Toronto. This will start at 4:30pm and is a good opportunity to meet with the players and coaches.
