WATERLOO, ON – The No.6 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team has announced their Players of the Week following their Week 2 victory over the Carleton Ravens on Saturday night, to pace the Hawks to 2-0 on the season. The athletes recognized include running back Levondre Gordon on offence, defensive back Isaiah Guzylak-Messsam on defence and kicker Nathan Mesher on special teams.
Gordon, a third year running back from Mississauga, Ont., was unmistakeable on Laurier’s offence as he helped the Hawks secure a 38-35 win. Gordon scored two touchdowns in the victory, and also recorded career-high in carries (27) and rushing yards (208). His performance marked the second consecutive season where a Laurier running back has recorded over 200 rushing yards against the Ravens, with Eric Guiltinan having accomplished the feat (201 yards) in 2016.
Defensively, Isaiah Guzylak-Messam of Hamilton, Ont., expertly covered a lot of territory in the secondary for Laurier, which was evident in his game-high three pass break-ups. Guzylak-Messam’s first career interception was also the lone one for either team on the night.
Meanwhile, kicker Nathan Mesher matched his output from last year’s Yates Cup game by going 5/5 from the spot against Carleton – including a 45-yard boot through the uprights. The fourth-year Waterloo native also averaged 41.3 yards on his seven punts, three of which dropped inside the 20 yard line for the second straight game.
The Laurier Football Players of the Week are presented by OneCard and the Laurier Bookstore.
