Last Thursday evening we were in Toronto at York University to play the Lions and we came away with a 53-31 win, moving us to 5-1 on the season.
We continue to have amazing quarterback play and Michael Knevel is quickly moving up the Laurier record books through the air.
Michael was 21-29 for 431 yards passing and five TDs. His favorite target was, once again, Kurleigh Gittens Jr. who had eight more receptions for 210 yards and two TD’s. Kurleigh now sits alone in the Laurier record book for receptions in a season with 57 on the year, with two games remaining.
Knevel also found Brentyn Hall 6 times for 125 yards and two TD’s and Daniel Bennett added two receptions for 59 yards and a TD.
On the ground, Levondre Gordon was special racking up 124 yards and two TD’s on just 12 carries. Eli Fera also impressed with five carries for 39 yards.
The York offense got a big boost with the return of receiver Colton Hunchak who was out all season with an elbow injury until Thursday evening. Quarterback (and brother) Brett Hunchak found Colton 14 times for 170 yards and two TD’s.
The big plays on defence were defensive lineman Travaughan James, who got a sack, and defensive back Scott Hutter, who had a great interception in the second half.
Our defensive player of the game and OUA & Usports defensive player of the week was Shomari Hutchinson, who recorded 14.5 tackles in his first ever start on defence.
Other defenders swarming to ball were Godfrey Onyeka with 5.5 tackles, Christian Hutter-Coppin with 5 and Ron Kinga with 4.5.
Nathan Mesher was 1 for 1 on field goals, connecting from 24 yards out. He was also a perfect 7 for 7 on extra points. Rounding-out his play was the 38.9 yard average on punts.
In the return game, Carson Ouellette had two returns for 44 yards while Gittens Jr. had nice returns for 159 yards. Add that to Kurleigh’s receiving numbers and he had a whopping 369 total yards, which leads the whole nation in that category.
We make the quick 20 minute trip down HWY 7 to take on the 3-3 Guelph Gryphons this Saturday at 1 pm. Guelph is a very good football team that is coming off of a bye week and we need to play our best game of the year this week.
