WATERLOO, ON – The No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team announced their players of the week following the team’s 24-14 loss to the No. 10 Guelph Gryphons on the road Saturday afternoon.
Gordon, a native of Mississauga, Ont., continued his strong season this past weekend as he led the Hawks’ offensive efforts against the Gryphons. The third year sociology major rushed the ball 21 times for 71 yards and a touchdown, recording one of Laurier’s two majors on the day. His performance moved him into a tie for first in the country for rushing touchdowns with eight and into fifth for rushing yards with 781 this season.
Smith, originally from Brampton, Ont., continue his outstanding season as he added two more sacks to his season total, giving him 8.5 on the year. That number ranks him first overall in U SPORTS for sacks and leaves him one sack behind Yannick Carter for Laurier’s all-time single season record, a mark that Carter set back in 2006, with one game remaining this season. The third year kinesiology and physical education major also had 5.5 tackles in the contest, along with a pass breakup.
Onyeka had an outstanding day on special teams for the purple and gold as he was in on three tackles on punt coverage while also recovery a fumble on a punt. Onyeka would finish the game with two special teams tackles as a part of 7.5 total tackles on the afternoon.
