WATERLOO, ON – The No. 7 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team announced their players of the week following the team’s 40-15 victory over the No. 5 McMaster Marauders at home on Saturday afternoon.
Arndt, a native of London, Ont., made his first career start for the purple and gold in a game that determined which team finished second in the conference. Facing the second-ranked defence in Canada, that had allowed just 10 or more points on two occasions going into the game, the second year kin/phys. ed. Major didn’t show any signs of nerves as he completed 18 of his 23 passing attempts for 213 yards and three touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing, posting 65 yards on three carries, highlighted by a 53-yard touchdown run.
Smith, originally from Brampton, Ont., earned defensive honours for the third time this season as he set a new school record for sacks in a season against the Marauders. The third year kin/phys. ed. major led a defensive effort that held the Marauders to just 15 points. Smith finished the game with 3.5 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and one pass breakup with his two sacks giving him 10.5 on the year. That number broke the previous Laurier record of 9.5 set by Yannick Carter in 2006.
Timmons, who joined Laurier from Mississauga, Ont., was outstanding on special teams in his return to the lineup. The fourth year history major was perfect in his long snapping duties while also hustling down field, recording two special teams tackles, limiting McMaster to just 10 total yards between the two returns.
