WATERLOO, ON –  The No.5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team announced their players of the week following their 75-32 loss against the No.2 Western Mustangs in the 110th Yates Cup OUA Championship in London on Saturday afternoon.

This week’s Laurier Football Players of the Week are quarterback Michael Knevel on offence, defensive back Scott Hutter on defence and receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. on special teams.

Hailing from Brantford, Ont., Knevel, recipient of last year’s offensive athlete of the week following Laurier’s Yates Cup victory, has once again put up a strong performance in an OUA Championship game, after missing two games due to injury. Despite the loss, Knevel went 25-for-49 with one interception in addition to amassing 432 passing yards and throwing 3 touchdowns, one of which being a whopping 74 yard pass to Brentyn Hall for a touchdown. Moreover, Knevel also contributed to Laurier’s running game as he had four carries for 21 yards on the day.

As for Hutter, the third year native of London, Ont., made sure to give a memorable performance for his hometown on Saturday. Hutter anchored the purple and gold defence, posting 10 tackles, half a sack and a forced fumble.

Only days after being named the OUA MVP, Gittens Jr. of Ottawa, Ont., once again proved to the crowd that he’s worthy of the title. While leading the Golden Hawks special teams unit with seven kickoff returns for 131 yards, Gittens Jr. also added to Laurier’s offence with three carries for 13 yards and six catches for 119 yards.

The Laurier Football Players of the Week are presented by OneCard and the Laurier Bookstore.
