Laurier football weekly update

20171111 - Kha Vo - Laurier Football vs WES_-641Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

The Yates Cup on Saturday marked the end of the season as we lost 75-32 to the Western Mustangs. Western was clearly the better football team and dominated us for the final three quarters.

Game recap & video

After Western opened up a 10-0 lead, we stormed back with nine points of our own with a safety and a 27-yard touchdown connection from Michael Knevel to Brentyn Hall.

The back-and-forth first quarter continued as Western took the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. We then answered right back on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Knevel to Brendan McCracken to end the first quarter at 17-16 for Western. From that point on it was all Western as they won the second quarter 26-0.

After the game it wasn’t about breaking down the X’s and O’s as to why we lost, it was more a time for everyone to thank our graduating players. This is a group very dear to our staff, as this was our first recruiting class back in 2013.

These 17 & 18 years old at the time went 1-7 in their first year. Five years later, their expectations are completely different and these 22 & 23 year-olds are grown and mature men that just played in their second straight Yates Cup. Even under the circumstances of a blow-out defeat, these young men have a lot to be proud of. They will always be remembered by our staff as the group that turned this thing around.

What’s Next:

The best remedy for the end of season football mourning is to stay busy and get back to work and that is exactly what we are doing. We are fully immersed in recruiting and next week I will share with you a great list of commits we already have.

Our players are also being kept busy with a couple of extra meetings and practices this week and next. These extra practices after the season is something that we have done since 2013 and it allows our young players to continue to improve rather than just sitting-back and watching as the four teams still playing widen the gap with the rest of the teams in the country.

  1. Congratulations Coach on a great season and I wish the Hawks much success moving forward.
Always a pleasure to brag on the Purple and Gold.
I’m in London and had bragging rights last year. Now I say we’re 1-1 with the rubber in 2018.
