WATERLOO, ON – For the third consecutive year, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team will head to Quebec for a preseason game as they will face the McGill Redmen on Friday, August 17 at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.
The contest marks the fourth straight season in which head coach Michael Faulds’ squad will play a non-conference game with the team facing Saskatchewan, Montreal and Concordia in previous years.
“We are excited once again to journey to the province of Quebec and play a well-coached team in the McGill Redman,” said Faulds. “Coach Hilaire and I have known each other for many years, since we played together on Team Canada as teenagers, so getting our teams together is a natural fit.”
“A preseason game like this not only helps our coaching staff figure out our roster and see who should be the Week 1 starters, but just as importantly it brings our team together,” added Laurier’s bench boss. “When we return we will be a much better team and closer knit group than before and we will be ready for a week of preparation for our first OUA opponent, the Ottawa Gee-Gees.”
Although the Hawks are 0-3 in their other three preseason games, the last two meetings against RSEQ opposition have been tight contests with Laurier falling to the Montreal Carabins 37-33 in 2016 and 23-16 in 2017 to the Concordia Stingers.
Last season, the Hawks finished second in the OUA with a 6-2 record, advancing to the Yates Cup Championship where they fell to the eventual Vanier Cup champions, the Western Mustangs.
As for the Redmen, they finished last in the five-team RSEQ conference with a 1-7 record, failing to qualify for the post-season.
Laurier’s 2018 regular season will get underway nine days after the exhibition matchup when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Knight-Newbrough Field on Sunday, August 26 for their home opener.
