WATERLOO, ON – Last Wednesday evening, the Wilfrid Laurier Department of Athletics and Recreation hosted the 19th annual Golden Hawks Football Dinner, presented by Sun Life Financial, at Bingemans Conference Centre.
The event raised over $35,000 which will directly benefit the Golden Hawks football program.
Highlighting the evening was Laurier Alumni, D.J. Demers, an award-winning stand-up comedian who filled the room with laughter and engaged the audience in a comic manner. The event was hosted by emcee Andy Baechler, a former Golden Hawk and varsity football player. Speakers of the night also included greetings from Laurier President, Dr. Deborah MacLatchy and words of gratitude from former linebacker and 2017 Grey Cup Champion Nakas Onyeka.
Finally, Coach Michael Faulds delivered his annual State of the Program address which reflected on the 2017 season, as well as this year’s Spring Camp, and provided a positive outlook for the upcoming 2018 season.
The Golden Hawks Football Dinner is a fundraising initiative of the Laurier Golden Hawk Football program. To date, the event has raised over $1 million for the Golden Hawk football program. The funds are directed into enhancements and support, such as equipment, academic assistance, coaching support and facilities.
Laurier will open their 2018 season at home on Sunday, August 26th when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees at University Stadium. Laurier will also play host for the Battle of Waterloo against the Waterloo Warriors (Saturday, September 15th), the Guelph Gryphons (Homecoming- Saturday, September 29th) and the Windsor Lancers (Friday, October 12) in their 2018 home schedule.
