WATERLOO, ON – Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football player Alex Pigozzo has been selected to represent Canada at the 2018 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) U19 World Championship getting underway this weekend in Mexico City.
Pigozzo, a 6’4″, 280 lbs. offensive lineman from Kitchener, Ont., joins a Canadian team looking to repeat as gold medalists after winning the 2016 event in Harbin, China.
“We are thrilled that Alex has been given the opportunity to play for Team Canada down in Mexico City,” commented Laurier head coach Michael Faulds, who guided Canada to a silver medal at the Senior World Championship at quarterback in 2011. “It is always special to put on a football uniform, but when that uniform says Canada on it you get even more emotional and excited to play.”
A graduate of Resurrection CSS, Pigozzo appeared in two games in his rookie season in 2017 with the purple and gold, dressing against the Western Mustangs and the McMaster Marauders.
Canada will kick off the tournament on Saturday, July 14 when they face Sweden. The red and white will then face either Mexico or Japan on July 18 with medal games to follow on July 22. All of Canada’s games will be livestreamed on CBCSports.ca.
