Laurier football weekly update

IMG_0041This newsletter is brought to you by our great friends (and the best movers) AMJ Campbell.

Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

The preseason game at McGill last Friday night went very well. It is always good to come away with a big 33-9 victory on the road but, more importantly, we gained valuable experience.

All of the 68 players that traveled were involved in the win and the gap between our starters and backups has closed greatly. We now have solid depth at all positions and our coaching staff is pleased with having to make some very tough dress roster decisions this year.

Three different quarterbacks (Tristan Arndt, Jacob Spinella and Connor Carusello) all played and operated the offence well. The big boys up front paved the way for an impressive 289 rushing yards, capped off by a late 72-yard touchdown run by second year running back Kevin Wong.

Through the air, receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. once again showed why he’s an early candidate for the Hec Creighton award with four catches for 141 yards and a TD in just a quarter-and-a-half of play.

The defensive front led by Robbie Smith and Trevaughan James put extreme pressure on the McGill quarterbacks all evening long. McGill’s offence only totaled 124 yards, which we are really pleased about considering how many young players played significant minutes.

The big play of the night on defence happened in the fourth quarter as second year linebacker Mario Pineda intercepted the McGill quarterback and ran it back 65 yards for the TD.

Special Teams
Kicker Nathan Mesher was 2 for 2 on field goals, hitting from 39 and 23 yards.

In the return game, running back Kavantye Bailey and receivers Esson Hamilton and Romy Simpson all did very well. They accumulated 60 yards on punt returns and another 79 yards on kick returns.
