TORONTO, ON – Following their Week 1 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team has earned their highest ranking since 2007 as they sit No. 4 in the first U SPORTS Top 10 of the 2018 season.
Reaching the milestone for the first time since October 9, 2007, the ranking marks the 22nd consecutive poll that the Hawks have been ranked. Laurier’s best-ever ranking was No. 2 in Canada, a position they held over five weeks to close out the 2004 season.
New this season, U SPORTS is implementing the ELO Rating System for the calculation of its weekly national rankings, in conjunction with its regular Football Reporters of Canada panel. Powered by RankR, ELO’s unique algorithm blends a statistical calculation with customized variables that is adaptable across a range of sports. For football, it will be combined with the results of the media panel balloting (each weighted 50%) to produce the final Top 10.

The Hawks are coming off a 39-21 victory over the Gee-Gees last Sunday, posting their fourth straight win over the visitors from Ottawa and winning their fifth consecutive opening game to start a season, dating back to 2014.
Laurier’s next opponent, the Queen’s Gaels, who they will face in Week 2 on Sunday, September 2, also cracked the Top 10 at No. 9, setting up an early-season showdown of Top 10 opponents this weekend.
