This newsletter is brought to you by our great friends (and the best movers) AMJ Campbell.
Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,
Thank you to all that braved a humidex of 38 degrees and attended the season opener last Sunday afternoon as we took on the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Your support helped guide us to a 39-21 victory, which is a great way to start the year versus a quality opponent.
We had a very balanced offensive attack on Sunday afternoon with 219 rushing yards and 218 passing yards.
On the ground, our offensive line and full backs did a great job creating lanes for numerous ball carriers. We were led by running back Levondre Gordon who had 14 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Veteran RB Osayi Iginuan also had a touchdown rush.
Through the air, quarterback Tristan Arndt was efficient, going 17 for 26. Once again, the favourite target was receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. who had eight receptions for 129 yards. Fellow receiver Brendan McCracken also had a very good game catching four passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.
We were stifling on defence again as we allowed Ottawa just 13 first downs on the afternoon. Two more really impressive stat lines, which we accomplished on defence is holding the opponent to under 100 yards rushing and also under 50% completions in the pass game. Any time you can do those two things it is a great recipe for success.
Defensive end Robbie Smith led us up front with a sack and two more quarterback hurries. Our tackling was spread out evenly with Smith and defensive backs Malcolm Thompson, Scott Hutter and Will Amoah all recording 3.5 tackles.
The big play in the second half was a terrific interception by defensive back Will Amoah, the first of his OUA career.
Kicker Nathan Mesher was 3 for 3 on field goals, with his longest being a 39-yarder.
In the return game, running back Kavantye Bailey and receivers Esson Hamilton and Romy Simpson all did very well. They accumulated 60 yards on punt returns and another 79 yards on kick returns.
This weekend, we will make the trip to Kingston where we will face the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday evening at 6:30pm.
Queen’s is the ninth-ranked team in the country and are also 1-0 after beating York in week #1, 42-21. We will have a full game recap in next week’s newsletter.
