WATERLOO, ON – Men’s football receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. and women’s rugby fullback Hayley Desjardins have been announced as this week’s Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 3, 2018.
Gittens Jr., a native of Ottawa, put on a show for the No. 4 Golden Hawks in their 44-18 victory over the No. 9 Queen’s Gaels on Sunday. The fourth-year sociology major had one of the best performances of his career as he hauled in 12 receptions for 178 yards and a touchdown. He also added 77 yards on nine punt returns. The 12 catches are tied for the fourth most in a single game by a Laurier player and the 178 yards are the fifth most in a single game in team history. For his efforts, Gittens Jr. currently ranks second in the conference in receiving yards with 307 and leads the OUA in all-purpose yards with 457.
This marks the second time in his career, and first time this season, that Gittens Jr. has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.
Desjardins, originally from Toronto, got the Golden Hawks off to a flying start as they kicked off their 2018 season with a convincing 58-28 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues. The fifth-year biology major scored a pair of tries for the purple and gold in the win as her leadership and speed were on full display.
This marks the first time in her career that Desjardins has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.
