WATERLOO, ON – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team have announced their players of the week following the team’s Week 7 victory over the Carleton Ravens.
Connor Carusello – Quarterback
Carusello, a native of Caledonia, Ont., got his Golden Hawks career off to a flying start as he played a crucial role in helping the Hawks snap their three-game losing streak on Friday. The first-year arts major showed little signs of nerves in his first career start at Laurier, completing 21-of-31 passes for 383 yards and four touchdowns in the Hawks’ 37-31 victory. Even more impressive for Carusello is that on three occasions, after Carleton took the lead, he answered their score with a touchdown pass on the next possession to help Laurier return to .500 for the season.
Robbie Smith – Defensive Lineman
Smith, a native of Brampton, Ont., had one of his finest performances of the season to help the Hawks return to the win column. The fourth-year kinesiology and physical education major recorded a season-high six tackles to limit the Ravens to just 91 yards rushing in the contest. Smith also picked up his third sack of the season, moving him into solo second on Laurier’s all-time list, while also registering a forced fumble and a pass breakup.
Esson Hamilton – Returner
Hamilton, a native of Toronto, was a force all-over the field for Laurier on Friday but shone particularly bright on special teams in the Hawks’ victory. The first-year arts major posted 154 yards on five kickoff returns, including a spectacular 73-yard return in the second quarter that led to Laurier’s first touchdown of the game. In total, Hamilton finished the contest with 253 all-purpose yards to lead the purple and gold on the afternoon.
