Laurier Football Update – Week 1

Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

This newsletter is brought to you by our great friends and the best movers AMJ Campbell.

It was a hard-fought physical home opener vs the Western Mustangs on Sunday. Statistically we were the better team in many areas, but penalties and a few big plays were the difference in a 32-19 loss.

Offence:

With great protection up front from the offensive line QB Connor Carusello completed 34 of 48 passes for 360 yards. He spread the ball around evenly, with 7 different targets having 3 or more receptions. His favourite targets on the day were Brentyn Hall who had 7 receptions for 132 yards and a TD and Brendan McCracken who had 4 receptions for 53 yards and a TD. On the ground RB Levondre Gordon led the way with 15 carries for 79 yards, he also had 4 receptions for 31 yards, putting him over 100 yards on the afternoon. Altogether we had more first downs, yards, offensive plays and time of possession than Western, but at the end of the day we didn’t finish enough drives in the endzone, and this finish will be our focus going forward.

Defence:

A terrific performance on all 3 levels of defence Sunday afternoon. Any time you can hold Western to less than 300 yards of total offence, under 100 yards rushing and just 51 total offensive plays you have had a great day at the office. Upfront our defensive lineman was tough to handle and put a lot of pressure on Western’s QB and sacked him 5 times. DE Alfred Green led the charge with 2.5 sacks, while DL Sam Acheampong, LB Brad Cowan and DL James Fleurissaint all chipped in. The player seen flying around the field the most was LB Tommy Bringi who had 9 tackles and seemed to be in on every single play. At the third level of defence Jordan Veltri had 3 pass breakups and last years All-Canadian DB Will Amoah picked right back up from where he left off last season getting an interception.

Special Teams:

In his first start ever Long Snapper Liam Spencer did a great job getting the ball back to Punter Nathan Mesher. Nathan was a perfect 2-2 on field goals connecting from 30 and 31 yards. In the return game WR Ente Eguavoen was very impressive with a total of 5 returns for 118 yards. RB Kaventye Bailey had 1 kick return for 21 yards and DB Malcolm Thompson returned 6 punts for 47 yards. Our cover units were led by DB’s Patrick James and Chris Haggart.
