Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

This newsletter is brought to you by our great friends and the best movers AMJ Campbell.

It was not a pretty win on Labour Day Monday, but a win is a win and we defeated the York Lions 18-10. After finding ways to lose close games last year we were proud of the guys finding a way to win ugly.

We once again struggled on offence manufacturing points and finishing drives. We have also come down with the injury bug, which is never good but especially this early in the season. That all being said, we found a way to win and had some big plays through the air and on the ground. QB Connor Carusello was 17 of 29 for 217 yards. His favourite target was WR Ente Eguavoen who had 8 receptions for 120 yards. The offensive line did a good job upfront paving the way for 178 rushing yards. RB Levondre Gordon led the way with 133 yards on 24 carries and RB Kevin Wong was impressive with 4 carries for 39 yards and a touchdown.

We essentially played a perfect game on defence as York’s only touchdown came on special teams. We limited York to just 222 total yards and for the second straight week held the opponent to under 100 yards rushing. We once again put pressure on the opposing quarterback and DT Sam Acheampong led the way with 1.5 sacks. Other defenders getting to the York QB were DT Trevaughan James, DE Zach Houghron and LB Brad Cowan. Brad was also our leading tackler with 6.5. Also flying to the ball were defenders DB Ayo Ajayi with 6 tackles and LB Tommy Bringi with 5.5. Our coverage was fantastic limiting York’s quarterbacks to less than 50% completions and an amazing 12 pass breakups.

Special Teams:

Kicker Nathan Mesher had a very good day punting the ball and averaged 41.5 per punt and more impressively 5 were inside York’s 20-yard line, Nathan was also 3 for 5 on field goals. Returners WR Ente Eguavoen, WR Romy Simpson and RB Kavantye Bailey combined for 12 punt and kick returns for 123 yards. We also had some amazing blocks on specials as DT Sam Acheampong got his big hand up to block a field goal and first year RB Tanner Nelmes blocked a York punt in the forth quarter.

Saturday, September 7th at 7pm we host the Toronto Varsity Blues at University Stadium. Toronto has had a very good season and are 1-1. They have the most explosive offence in the OUA through two weeks and QB Clay Sequeria is playing at an All-Canadian level. We will need to be at our best to win this football game.
