Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,
This newsletter is brought to you by our great friends and the best movers AMJ Campbell.
Saturday evening in front of a large frosh crowd we suffered a tough 38-34 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues. Full credit to Toronto who played a very good game and once again undisciplined play cost us many opportunities. This is something we are addressing in many ways and we look to have cleaner play this weekend up in Ottawa.
It was a productive evening on offence with 33 first downs and 515 yards, but the points for didn’t match our yardage and too many drives we had to settle for a field goal. We were able to establish the run behind great blocking upfront by the offensive line. We totaled 267 yards rushing and once again RB Levondre Gordon led in that category with 27 carries for 176 yards and a touchdown and Kevin Wong chipped in with 12 carries for 53 yards. Through the air QB Connor Carusello put the ball in great spots all night, but we struggled at times coming up with key catches. Connor finished 18 of 31 for 248 yards. Top targets were Julian Mitchell with 5 catches for 93 yards and Brentyn Hall with 6 catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.
We knew coming in how explosive Toronto’s offence had been all year and that they were. We were able to hold them to their fewest yards all season 404 and limited them to just 48 offensive plays, but there QB put the ball in great spots a few times for big plays. Once again, we held an opponent for the third straight week to under 100 yards rushing, which is never easy to do. LB Brad Cowan played very well tallying 3.5 tackles and the only QB sack on the evening. Others accumulating tackles were LB Shomari Hutchinson and DE Tyler Eckert leading the way with 4 each and then LB Tommy Bringi and DB’s Malcolm Thompson and Patrick James all getting 3 tackles.
Once again first year running back Tanner Nelmes from Guelph came up huge and blocked a punt in the first quarter and returned it 42 yards for the touchdown. This is Tanner’s second blocked punt in just his 3rd ever game. We also had another block as DE Alfred Green blocked a Toronto field goal attempt. Kicker Nathan Mesher was a perfect 4/4 on field goals, connecting from 24, 19, 36 and 35 yards away. Nathan also average a solid 41 yards on his 5 punts. Top coverage players on special teams were LB Shomari Hutchinson, DB Adem Ireyomi and DB Jordan Veltri.
