Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

This newsletter is brought to you by our great friends and the best movers AMJ Campbell.

The 2019 Homecoming game was a success as we finally put together 4 solid quarters of football and beat the Queens Gaels 52-16. Thank you to all of you that attended even though it was a bit of a rainy pregame and first quarter.

Offence

It was a very well-balanced attack as we amassed over 500 yards of offence, 258 in the air and 247 on the ground. QB Connor Carusello threw some terrific deep balls and finished the game 9 of 17 for 244 yards. The first long pass was to WR Romy Simpson, who is back from injury and hauled in the 60-yard TD reception. WR Brentyn Hall also caught a long 49-yard reception that setup a touchdown rush and then early in the third quarter Carusello hit a speedy WR Ente Eguavoen for a big 54-yard TD reception. On the ground, 8 different hawks carried the football behind some outstanding blocking by the offensive line and full backs. Once again RB Levondre Gordon led the way with 15 carries for 119 yards, including a big 52-yard TD rush in the second quarter. This run put Levondre over 3,000 yards rushing for his career and he is now 3rd on the All-Time Laurier rushing list. The other touchdown came from veteran full back Osayi Iginuan who carried the ball 7 times for 31 tough yards.

Defence

We were stout all afternoon on defence, holding the Queen’s offence to just 12 first downs and a total of 209 yards. For the 5th consecutive game we held the opponent to under 100 yards rushing, in fact Queen’s only got 60 yards on the ground. The Queen’s QB was under duress all afternoon and threw for under 50% completions. We were also able to get 5 sacks on him, DL Sam Acheampong with two and DL Trevaughan James, DL James Fleurissaint and DB Malcolm Thompson all with one each. The biggest play on defence came in the second quarter as All-Canadian DB Will Amoah intercepted the ball and took it all the way back 37 yards for the touchdown.  In terms of tackles, LB Tommy Bringi once again led the way with 7.5, but he had a lot of help as James Fleurissaint had 5, Trevaughan James with 3.5 and Malcolm Thompson with 3.

Special Teams

In the kicking game Nathan Mesher was 2 for 2 on field goals, connecting from 20 and 11 yards out. He also averaged 38.9 yards on 12 punts. On one Mesher punt in the 3rd quarter our coverage unit was able to fly down the field and LB Jordan French recovered the ball in the endzone for a touchdown. In the return game, receiver Ente Eguavoen handled all punt and kick returns and finished with 13 returns for 125 yards.

Next Up: We travel down to Windsor this weekend to take on the Windsor Lancers Saturday, October 5th at 1pm. Windsor has played very hard this season and have had many close games. This includes leading against Western this past weekend well into the 2nd quarter. We will have to play our best to get a big road win.

We did it!! Our 2019/20 Adopt-A-Hawk campaign has reached 123% of our team goal of $40,000, currently we have an impressive $49,306 and counting.
