Laurier Football Update – Week 8

Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

This newsletter is brought to you by our great friends and the best movers AMJ Campbell.

The highs and lows of an OUA season were felt within one week! One week we are excited to say that we have won our third straight game in the Battle of Waterloo, which was a 53-50 three overtime thriller and a week later we lose to Carleton 22-10, ending our season at 4-4. Some years 4-4 and even 3-5 will get you into the playoffs, but that is not the case this season. Laurier, Waterloo and Carleton are all 4-4, but based on tiebreaking procedures/rules we are out, while the other two teams live to play at least another week.

This is a disappointing end to our season, but there is no one to blame but ourselves as we let very winnable games slip away early in the year. The two that really come to mind are the 17 point lead we had on Toronto way back on September 7th only to lose and the 19 point lead we gave up to Ottawa on September 14th. The OUA is now too deep and competitive to allow those things to happen and not feel the sting for a long time.

There is no raw raw speech to the team…the message is that this is life! In their lives there will be many moments of absolute excitement and jubilation and at the snap of the fingers there will be moments of adversity and complete horror. What’s important is finding the strength to pick yourself back up and move on. The sun comes up every day and every day we have a choice to attend class, make our workouts, eat healthy, get sleep, be a good family member and be someone that the greater Laurier Community can be proud of. We will spend the extra time with the season behind us doing all these things better!

To the sixteen 4th & 5th year seniors we cannot thank them enough for their incredible efforts on and off the field. They truly will be missed, but we know they will be back on campus for frequent visits wearing their Purple & Gold proudly. For those not in attendance on senior day I think its important to list them exactly how the great Public Address Announcer Chris Povey introduced them to the crowd one last time:
