Laurier Football Update – June 2020

Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

This newsletter is brought to you by our great friends and the best movers AMJ Campbell.

I trust that all of you and your families are staying well during these unprecedented times. A lot has changed since our last newsletter – this might be one of the greatest understatements ever!

Unfortunately, we found out on Monday, June 8th that all fall OUA sports seasons have been cancelled.  This caught no one by surprise as we constantly kept in contact with our players and transparently let them know that a season was very unlikely. That being said, even when you know a bee is going to sting you, it still hurts when it finally does. Here is a quick interview with Darren Stevenson & 519 Sports Online about the cancellation news:

So what now? Well we are keeping busy and learning how to control what we control and only stress about the things that we control. Our players have finished up their winter semesters from home, with all classes moving online, and now many are taking summer school and have managed to find part-time work. The players also have their own workout app with username and password and are trying to stay productive with their home workouts. As a coaching staff we are meeting weekly and really focusing in on our 2021 recruiting class, while also conducting weekly player meetings.

Over the past couple weeks, we have been listening to our players, alumni and community to try and find the right way to support our black athletes and community members. We know it’s not enough just to be proud of our locker room diversity, and we must do more to ensure that systemic racism does not continue. It is vital that we stand by those who are oppressed in society, and not allow these conditions and attitudes to persist.

As a program, we decided to do this in two ways:

  1. We asked our athletes and our alumni community to share their voices, which we will be broadcasting on our social media pages throughout the coming weeks.
  2. We collected a list of resources that we encourage you to support, which have been recommended (or in one case even started) by the Laurier Football players and community. You’ll find these resources a little further down in this article:
