They are the favourites and they are the villains.

Kitchener native Alex Pigozzo and his Canadian teammates are bracing for a chilly reception Sunday at Mexico City’s Olympic Stadium, where Canada will face the host nation in the gold-medal game of the International Federation of American Football world U19 championship. Canada is the reigning champion and will be favoured to win against Mexico, which shocked the United States 33-6 in a semifinal game Wednesday. The Canadians moved on with a difficult 28-22 victory over Japan after cruising to an easy win over Sweden in their first game of the six-team event that also features an entry from Australia.

Training camp has come and gone and we are now into game prep for Sunday’s Home Opener against the Toronto Varsity Blues at 1pm. Please get your tickets at

It was a very good first week of practices, with both our veteran players and incoming freshman all digesting a lot of information and working extremely hard. We concluded the week with a trip to Montreal to take on the Concordia Stingers. We lost the game 23-16 but, for preseason games, it is a good idea to always look at the halftime score, as that is a better indication of starters vs. starters.

We’re just two weeks away from the start of training camp! Our whole team is getting ready and excited to report to camp on Thursday, August 10th.

We will have a week of practices, alternating two-a-day practice days with power practice days (one practice but longer) and then we will board the buses and head to Montreal to play a preseason game against Concordia University on Friday, August 18th at 2pm.

We are extremely happy with the depth we have at all positions and, despite losing some very talented players every year to graduation (and the CFL draft), it is definitely not a matter of starting over, but just reloading and getting even better.

Recruiting at the Canada Cup last week in Wolfville, Nova Scotia was a success. Once again, Team Quebec won the gold medal – which is their third consecutive Canada Cup victory. Here are the eight teams that were in the tournament and the place that they finished:

  1. Quebec
  2. Saskatchewan
  3. Ontario
  4. Alberta
  5. British Columbia
  6. Nova Scotia
  7. Manitoba
  8. New Brunswick

Throughout the week, coaches Dwayne Cameron, Irv Daymond and I were able to speak to these top under-18 players from around the country. We watched them practice, play in their respective games and (more importantly) saw how they carry themselves off the field – which is a good judge of character.

Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

Excitement is growing around the program as we are roughly six weeks away from training camp.

This Sunday, was our annual summer Organized Team Activity (OTA) and, amazingly, 75 players attended. The OTA is held once a summer and a chance to bring together the majority of the team.

Many players stay in Kitchener-Waterloo for the summer, but the OTA is something players who go home for the summer mark in their calendars and come back for.

Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

Many people tied to Laurier Football were in attendance on Saturday at Wildwinds Golf Links for the Gary Jeffries Golf Classic. It was a fun afternoon honouring the great career of Coach Jeff. Only six head coaches ever at our schools great football program and four of us were there together on Saturday.

The month of May has quickly come and gone and already we are under two and a half months until we start training camp.

More players than ever have decided to stay in Kitchener-Waterloo this summer to train and work out with their teammates. Many of these players spend the summer not only training, but taking summer school classes and working a variety of jobs.
