Training camp has come and gone and we are now into game prep for Sunday’s Home Opener against the Toronto Varsity Blues at 1pm. Please get your tickets at laurier.universitytickets.com

It was a very good first week of practices, with both our veteran players and incoming freshman all digesting a lot of information and working extremely hard. We concluded the week with a trip to Montreal to take on the Concordia Stingers. We lost the game 23-16 but, for preseason games, it is a good idea to always look at the halftime score, as that is a better indication of starters vs. starters.

We’re just two weeks away from the start of training camp! Our whole team is getting ready and excited to report to camp on Thursday, August 10th.

We will have a week of practices, alternating two-a-day practice days with power practice days (one practice but longer) and then we will board the buses and head to Montreal to play a preseason game against Concordia University on Friday, August 18th at 2pm.

We are extremely happy with the depth we have at all positions and, despite losing some very talented players every year to graduation (and the CFL draft), it is definitely not a matter of starting over, but just reloading and getting even better.

Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,

Excitement is growing around the program as we are roughly six weeks away from training camp.

This Sunday, was our annual summer Organized Team Activity (OTA) and, amazingly, 75 players attended. The OTA is held once a summer and a chance to bring together the majority of the team.

Many players stay in Kitchener-Waterloo for the summer, but the OTA is something players who go home for the summer mark in their calendars and come back for.

They won a Vanier Cup with Wilfrid Laurier University on a cold day in Hamilton back in 2005.

Later in life they stood side by side as the best man at each other’s wedding.

Now Kitchener’s Jahmeeks Beckford and Shawn Ashe have reunited on the football field with the Tri-City Outlaws.

Beckford is the team’s assistant defensive coach while Ashe is making his return as a slot receiver after lengthy hiatus due to a concussion.

“I’m a big fan of his,” said Beckford, 36. “It’s fantastic to see him out there comfortable and excited.”

Their football story goes back more than two decades.

The month of May has quickly come and gone and already we are under two and a half months until we start training camp.

More players than ever have decided to stay in Kitchener-Waterloo this summer to train and work out with their teammates. Many of these players spend the summer not only training, but taking summer school classes and working a variety of jobs.

QUEBEC CITY (U SPORTS) – Wayne Harris Jr. of the Vanier Cup finalist Calgary Dinos and Gary Waterman of the AUS champion StFX X-Men were introduced to the media Tuesday in Quebec city as head coaches ahead of the 2017 U SPORTS Valero East-West Bowl.

Harris Jr., who guided the Dinos to their fourth national championship appearance in eight seasons in November, will be at the helm of the West team on Saturday, while Waterman, who led the X-Men to a second straight national semifinal, will be in charge of the East squad – in a coaching rematch of the 2016 ArcelorMittal Dofasco Mitchell Bowl.

Going through the 2017 draft I find it’s always best to look backwards before looking forwards so with two days until the CFL draft I took a look at the quality and quantity of USPORTS players drafted by the Canadian Football League since 1985.

I weighed the average draft pick of each institution to see quality of athlete. While this obviously says nothing about the quality of the player during their supposed CFL career it does tell you something about their evaluation and generally speaking the quality of the program. I understand these numbers are skewed by variables such as players getting drafted far below their talent level due to NFL interest or injury concerns which might have little to no impact on the player once drafted, but it’s still informative to realize those variables have a comparatively small effect on the overall question of quantity vs. quality.

Golden Hawk alumni & friends of the football program,
